Rebels sweep Hinckley-Finlayson, defeat Proctor in five games

The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels swept the Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguars in three games in the season opener. Adri Jusczak led the way with seven kills and Haley Johnson had eight digs.

After leading two games to none, the Rebels got a real test of fortitude against the Proctor Rails in Moose Lake as the match lasted nearly two hours and went five games on Thursday, September 5.

The game scores were 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 22-25 and 17-15.

According to head coach Beckie Jackson, the Rebels served at a rate of 85 percent with 21 aces as a team, but with 16 service aces.

Karina Cisar had 12 kills to lead the Rebels in the match. Cisar also had five ace serves and five blocks, with four of those assisted and one of those being a solo block. Andrea Youngberg had six aces. Jodi Michalski had 10 kills and Adri Jusczak had six assists. Nikki Grutkoski put up 19 set assists and Maddie Ross added nine set assists. Adri Jusczak and Kayla Radel each had five aces and Haley Johnson added three digs.

Game one began with Grutkoski on serve and Johnson chasing a hit that would have been long. Dana Olson killed for 2-4. Lauren Ross ripped two aces, but Proctor came back for 9-7. Youngberg killed to knot it at 9-9.

Youngberg killed off a block and Michalski mashed a winner. Cisar sliced a sweet cross courter for 13-11. Olson blocked, but the Rails rallied for 16-16. Two aces by Radel prompted a Proctor time out as they were down 18-20. A deep serve by Radelwas not effectively passed by a Rail for 21-18. A Michalski kill was game point at 24-19 and Cisar sizzled the game-winner for 25-19.

Cesar killed for game two and a Michalski killed for 6-6. Cisar spanked two beautiful jump aces and Radel killed. Radel blocked and down 10-13, Proctor called time. Grutoski aced and Michalski killed. Michalski blocked for 19-12 and Cesar killed for 22-12. For the win, it was Ross on a kill and Michalski on another for the 25-16 win.

Proctor would come back and squeak out a 25-23 win to make it two games to one.

The third game was also close at 25-22 for the Rails.

An ace by Youngberg made it 4-4 in game five. Olson tipped.. As Youngberg missed a kill, ML-WR called time down 9-12.

Jusczak killed and Cisar blocked for 11-12. Jusczak made a smart tip for 12-13 and Proctor called time. Youngberg tipped off a block to tie it at 13-13. Cisar and Youngberg combined on a huge block for 14-14.

Proctor blew a pass and called time down 15-14 and came back with a kill off a double block for 15-15. Cisar’s big kill made it 16-15. Michalski killed off a block for the game and match winner at 17-15.
