Barnum girls compete at state

Right, Barnum Bomber Jamie Bird placed 52nd at the state golf competition held June 11-12 at Pebble Creek Golf Club. Left, Bomber Kelsey Timm placed 80th in the competition.

Two Barnum Bomber girls golfers headed to Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker to play in state competition June 11-12.

Kelsey Timm and Jamie Bird both headed to Becker to play in the state class A tournament.

This was the first time Barnum has had members compete at state, and only after the second year with a girls golf program in place.

Both girls had good showings, but were not in the running for titles. Nerves were evident the first day, but they recovered nicely and put up decent scores with Bird coming away just a little ahead of Timm.

The second day was more dificult. Due to rain, the girls did not get much time at the driving range. The rain stopped and held off long enough for the girls to get their rounds in.

Timm finished the second day of competition bettering her first day score by seven shots, bringing her in at the 80th position.

Bird, on the other hand, had much better luck, showing in the second day that she was there to have fun. Her first hole of the afternoon was likely her best, landing her second shot just short of a water hazard. Most players were hitting to the left of the hazard to go around it, but Bird chose to go for it and launched the ball over the hazard. It looked to clear it with ease, but the ball came down on some rocks and shot staight back into the air and fell just over the hazard into the grass just short of the green.

Bird came away from the tournament tied for 52nd place.
