Bird twins to attend Reebok High Performance Hockey Camp

Moose Lake Area Rebels hockey members Jamie and Jessica Bird will be attending an international Reebok High Performance Hockey Camp mid-June.

Information was recently received that the Bird twins, Jamie and Jessica, members of the Moose Lake Area Rebels hockey team, will be attending the International Reebok High Performance Hockey Camp this June.

Girls were tried out for High Performance from 15 teams from the more than 500 in Minnesota. The girls went to Hibbing for tryouts in March and after the first cut it was narrowed down to 30 players in early April. After two more weeks of tryouts, it was narrowed down to 20 from northern Minnesota, with both Bird girls making the cut. They went to Bemidji for seeding and they played two games where the girls were being evaluated for the summer camp.

The girls played next in the Spring Festival in Edina where there were 10 teams. In this process they were once again being evaluated on their skills. Out of 200 girls in the festival, 102 were chosen to go to the summer camp in St. Cloud set for June 15-20. Here, they will be coached by Division 1 coaches, ex-college and Olympic players. They will have guest inspirational speakers and will learn how to improve as a player.

Once at the camp, they will start the day at 6:45 a.m. and will end at 10 p.m. every night with intense on and off the ice training every minute.

The girls will be put into six different teams of 17 each at camp. Jamie will be on Team Gold playing defense for the Bemidji State Beavers coach. Jessica made the Grey Team, playing forward. Her coach is a hockey coach for the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux.

There were seven girls chosen from northern Minnesota to head to the camp; two from Barnum/Moose Lake (Moose Lake Area), the Bird girls; two from Cloquet; one from Duluth; one from Hibbing; and a goalie from Grand Rapids.
