Mercy board makes recommendation for general contractor

Mercy Hospital's Board of Directors voted on December 20 to approve a recommendation to begin negotiations with Oscar J. BOLDT Construction of Cloquet on a contract to provide preconstruction and construction services for the hospital expansion and remodel project.

The recommendation to pursue a contract with BOLDT was made by the Building and Grounds sub-committee of the board. The process of selecting a general contractor included reviewing the eight responses to Mercy's request for proposals, evaluation of fee proposals, and interviews with the top four candidates. Contract negotiations with BOLDT will likely be completed within 30 days, according to Keith Carlson, Mercy Director of Support Services.

"Getting the general contractor on board this early in the project is an important step as we move forward with our expansion," said Jason Douglas, Mercy CEO. "We know the quality of BOLDT's work from past experience on other Mercy projects, so we look forward to working with them once again. That they employ so many people locally is an added bonus."

Construction on the project is expected to start in June of 2013 and includes building a new two-story addition and remodeling a portion of the existing hospital. The new 116,400 square-foot facility will have 21 new private rooms and four labor and delivery rooms. Some departments will be relocated to improve the flow of services and better ensure patient and staff safety. When the project is finished, the hospital district will have a hospital that is efficient in design and enables modern healthcare services to be delivered safely and effectively well into the future.
