It has been a long time since the Moose Lake-Willow River girls basketball team defeated the Barnum Bombers. The Rebels did so — convincingly — with a big 50-33 win in Barnum on Monday, December 10. The Rebels worked the press and shot well to take a 34-20 lead at the break and coasted to the win, out-scoring Barnum just 16-13 in the second half.

Neither team handled the ball all that well overall, but the Rebels' press did create 13 first half turnovers by the Bombers while ML-WR kept its miscues to nine in the first half. By game’s end, the turnovers found Barnum with six more mistakes at 19 compared to 13 lost possessions for the Rebels.

Barnum shot just 1-for-7 from three-point land in the first half and only 1-for-5 from the arc in the second half for a total of just 2-for-12 (17 percent). The Rebels' outside shooting was hot in the first half at 4-for-6, but cooled off in the second half for a decent 4-for-8 (50 percent) for the game. Barnum’s overall field goal rate was not all that bad at 13-for-33 (39 percent).

The biggest difference came on the inside. ML-WR was a smoking 10-for-16 (63 percent) in the first half and a solid 8-for-18 (44 percent) in the second half for a game total on the inside of 18-for-34 (53 percent) which could beat many teams. Overall, the Rebels shot the twos and the threes at a combined 22-for-42 (52 percent).

Free throws were not much of a factor as Barnum went 5-for-9 for the game and ML-WR went 2-for-6 for the game.

Rebounding though was one determining factor. The Rebels out-rebounded the Bombers 19-10 for the game. Steals and assists were nearly split at 6-5 in the Bombers’ favor. Assists were in ML-WR’s favor at 6-4.

The individual statistics for the Rebels for points (including three-pointers), rebounds, steals and assists are as follows: Shaelyn Halverson: 14 (3), 0, 0, 0; Adri Jusczak: 8, 7, 0, 0; Taylor Miller: 8 (1), 3, 2, 2; Hayley Johnson: 6, 1, 1, 2; Kayla Radel: 6, 2, 0, 1; Holly Mattison 6, 0, 1, 0; Tayler Dixon: 2, 1, 0, 1; Dana Olson: 0, 1, 0, 0; Jodi Michalski: 0, 2, 0, 0; and Hannah Race: 0, 1, 0, 0.
