Coach Erik Skelton and the Mesabi East Giants boys’ basketball team were welcomed by the Moose Lake Willow River Rebels boys’ team on Monday, December 20. The Giants’ varsity and junior varsity is a small squad of 14 players compared to 25 Rebels. 

Willow River graduate, Evan Nelson, started the evening off by playing the National Anthem on his trumpet, before the players were introduced. Ana Beer, Ava Beer, Lilly Engleson, Mackenzie Hanson, Sonja Helfman, Katie Milczark, and Rylyn Shellenberger, members of the Rebels’ cheer squad, were cheering on the sidelines.  

At halftime the Rebels led 45-8 and the starters were sitting on the bench next to the coaches. MLWR won the contest 87-26. 

Scoring leader for the night was Phillip Sheetz with 15. Logan Orvedahl had 14, Duane Broughton and Nolan Nelson each had 10, Alex Watrin 8, Luke Dewey 7, Sam Dewey 6, Chance Lunde 4, Jayden Alleman, Kaden Robbins, Mizhakwad Miller each with 3, Hunter Van Heel and Adam Neumann each with 2.  Sam Dewey, Sheetz, and Orvedahl each had two from beyond the arch. Luke Dewey, Alleman, Miller, and Robbins each had one. 

Watrin pulled down 11 rebounds, Lunde 6, Nelson 4, S. Dewey, L. Dewey, Walker and Broughton each with 3. Watrin and Walker both finished with 3 steals. 

The Rebels were 3-for-4 at the free throw line for 75 percent. They made over 60 percent of their two-point shots.  

The Rebels’ JV squad won 72-25.  

The varsity Rebels’ squad are playing in the 2021 Crusader Christmas Boys’ Basketball Classic this week, December 28, 29, and 30. The other teams in the tournament are Spectrum, Litchfield, Melrose, Milaca, Concordia Academy, Royalton, and St. Cloud Cathedral.
