The Moose Lake Willow River Rebels boys' basketball team have won all their games this season. On Monday, December 16, the Rebels faced the Golden Bears in Eveleth-Gilbert. The Rebels were hot and scoring easily. At the half-time break, Rebels led 64-15. Eleven of the MLWR players were on the scoreboard. Seven three-point shots were made by Ben Dewey, Sam Dewey, Brady Watrin, Phillip Sheetz, and Michael Olson.
The Rebels were eight for twelve from the line for 66.7% accuracy. They stole the ball nineteen times compared to the Bears four times. The comforting fact was that eleven Rebel players scored. Brady Watrin led the team with 21, Mason Olson 16, Michael Olson 13, Ben Dewey 9, Sam Dewey 7, Landin Kurhajetz and Logan Orvedahl each with 6, Sheetz and Drew Danielson 3, Connor Welch and Alex Watrin finished with 2. The Rebels had nineteen assists. Eveleth-Gilbert had 7. Brady Watrin, Ben Dewey and Mason Olson were the assists leaders. The Rebels pulled down 42 rebounds, Golden Bears 27.
The game went to running time, Rebels won by 60, 88-28. After the game, a Golden Bear player said "The score wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be." The Rebel JV won 61-30.
The next night, December 17, the Rebels were host to Mesabi East. At half-time Rebels led 60-30. The Mesabi East Giants added another 30 in the second half and the Rebels scored 37, for a final score of 103-60. Coach Wes Cummins stated "Rim looked like a hula hoop tonight...17 three pointers!!" Michael Olson had 6 of them and Orvedahl, Brady Watrin, Sheetz, Connor Welch, Mason Olson, and Danielson shot the rest. Ten players scored for MLWR. Brady Watrin had a game high of 33, Mason Olson 21, Michael Olson 18, Danielson and Sheetz with 9, Orvedahl 5, Welch 3, Sam Dewey, Carter Johnson and Kurhajetz each with 2. Their field goal shooting percentage was 69.
The Rebels had 25 assists Mesabi-East 5. Brady Watrin , Mason Olson and Sam Dewey were the leaders in assists. Rebounding leader for MLWR was Kurhajetz, followed by Brady Watrin, Carter Johnson and Ben Dewey.
Scoring 30 points for Mesabi East was Hunter Hannuksula. The Rebel JV team won 79-18. The same night MLWR's seventh and eighth grade team defeated the two Carlton teams.
Because of the holidays, this paper has an early deadline so Friday's game with Cook County will be in the next issue.
Class AA leaders in the state based on current record, right now are Minnesota Valley Lutheran, Rockford, Caledonia and Moose Lake Willow River, Tracy Milroy Balaton. Pine City is fourteenth and Crosby-Ironton is ranked twentieth. MLWR is third in the most points scored. MLWR has won all their games this season by an average of 28.2 points and rank second in the state in Point Differential.
The Rebels will travel on December 26 for three days to play in the 2019 Crusader Christmas Boys' Basketball Classic at Cathedral High School in St. Cloud. Their first game is against Litchfield at 3:30. The other teams are Concordia Academy, Melrose, Breck, Royalton, Milaca and Cathedral. Litchfield's record is 4-1 so it should be an exciting game for the Rebels, so make a holiday trip over to St. Cloud to see some great basketball.
