The Moose Lake Willow River Rebels struggled offensively to put runs on the board on Tuesday, June 1, at Portage Park in Cohasset, near Grand Rapids, in the first round of baseball playoffs. Aitkin was seeded number two in the subsections. The Rebels lost 1-11 in five innings. The first round of the tournament was single elimination which means the Rebels’ baseball season is done.
Carter Johnson started the game off with a hit and then got the only Rebels’ stolen base when he took off for second. The Rebels’ started things off right in the beginning, when Sam Dewey drew a walk, scoring one run when Johnson crossed the plate. That ended up to be the only Rebel run.
Johnson and Mason Olson each had one hit. Johnson and Olson were the only Rebels to hit the ball. The Rebels left four runners stranded on base. Aitkin got 12 hits.
Logan Orvedahl was on the mound and took the loss for MLWR, lasting two and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits and nine runs while striking out one.
After defeating the Rebels, Aitkin defeated Greenway 11-1 in the 7:00 p.m. game. On Thursday, June 3, Aitkin played Virginia at 1:00 p.m. in Nashwauk-Keewatin and won that game 13-2. On Tuesday, June 8, Aitkin faced the #2 seed from the other subsection, Proctor, up at Superior. Results were not available at press time.
