The Moose Lake Willow River’s Softball team keeps winning in the Section 7AA playoffs in Grand Rapids on Thursday, June 3.
Rebels’ first game of the day was against Eveleth-Gilbert at 11:00 a.m. MLWR was seeded 2nd in Class 7AA Sub Section 1 and Eveleth-Gilbert was seeded 3rd in Class 7AA Sub Section 2. Alexis Hoffman hurled all seven innings of the 9-0 victory for the Rebels, allowed no runs, 8 strikeouts, 5 hits and only walking two. Natalie Mikrot went three-for-three in the batter’s box, batting in 2 runs. Sarah Christy slammed a double, getting 3 hits in her 4 times at the plate. Hallie Klavu hit the ball twice in her 4 times up to bat, scoring 2 runs and 2 runs-batted-in. Sandra Ribich got 1 hit sending in 2 runs home. Defensively the Rebels held Eveleth-Gilbert scoreless.
The victory qualified MLWR to move on in the brackets and play Proctor at 1:00 p.m. Proctor was seeded 1st in Class 7AA Sub Section 2. On April 20, the Rebels were 10-runned by Proctor, losing 14-4. MLWR Rebels were determined to win the rematch. Sarah Christy tossed the seven-inning game. Proctor had 2 earned runs, on 4 hits. Christy struck out 7, while walking 2. Lily Kahara got 2 hits in her 2 plate appearances, scoring 2 runs. Mikrot scored 2 runs getting 1 hit. Klavu batted in 3 runs and hit a double. The Rebels won 6-2 and the right to move on in the winner’s bracket and play Greenway.
Their next game was Tuesday, June 8, at 1:00 p.m. in Cloquet. Greenway was seeded 2nd in Class 7AA Sub Section 2 and MLWR is seeded 2nd in Sub Section 1. The Section tournament is double elimination. A win in the Greenway game will put the Rebels in the Section Championship game at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, in Cloquet. A loss will give them a second game at 3:00 p.m. against the winner of the loser bracket.
The Minnesota State High School League’s state baseball tournament will be held June 15-16 at Caswell Park. Caswell Park is one of the premier softball complexes in the nation at 1875 Howard Drive, North Mankato, Minn.
