The Moose Lake/Willow River Lady Rebels divided a set of games again this past week, losing to Virginia and beating Cook County.
On Thursday, December 18, MLWR played a makeup game with Virginia. The Rebels started the game against Virginia well with Maci Kukuk making the first 3-point shot. Ella Rhoades contributed with a pair of 3-pointers of her own, but the Blue Devils were able to make the three’s as well to keep the game within reach. The Rebels were unable to play the tight defense that they wanted to, allowing Virginia to get both easy rebounds and second chances as well as shooting and making the 3-point shots. MLWR’s shooting went cold at times allowing the Blue Devils to pull away and take a 48-35 lead into the locker room at half time.
The Rebels were not able to get much going in the second half as the play was pretty much the same as the first half. There were a few bright spots with steals and breakaways, but there were too many turnovers and missed opportunities. MLWR played the BlueDevils practically point for point in the second half, but was not able to get into any rhythm. Virginia beat the Rebels 84-72. Maci Kukuk led all Rebel scorers with 25 points
Friday, December 19, the Lady Rebels played Cook County in a double header with the boys. The game started out slow on both ends of the floor. At the 13-minute mark, the score was tied at 4 but Natalie Mikrot drove in for a layup and foul and a 3-pointer by Maci Kukuk got the Rebel scoring going. The Rebels took a 24-17 lead into the locker room at half time. The second half proved to be a little more difficult for MLWR as Cook County played a tighter game and the Rebels had a difficult time making their shots. Rebels won 56-46.
