The Cromwell Cardinals began their state tournament run meeting the Jaguars of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, on Thursday, March 12, in the third game of the Class A quarterfinals at Maturi Pavilion on the grounds of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis campus.
The Cromwell Cardinals started out feeling the competition up a bit as it would seem to be a slow run in the beginning. The Hakamaki cousins soon found a rhythm and Taya, Shaily and Natalee would score 54 of the Cardinals' 67 game points with Andrea Pocernich putting up 13 points herself. The Cardinals led at halftime 41-33, and came out in the second half matching up point for point with the Jaguars. Taya Hakamaki played strong, looking for the open player and when she couldn't find an open player she would drive the lane and find a way to score. Taya put up 34 points, with 2 defensive rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, 1 block, hit two 3-pointers, and would shoot 10 of 11 from the free-throw line. Shaily Hakamaki ended the afternoon with 15 points, 8 defensive rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and hit one 3-pointer. Andrea Pocernich ended her afternoon with 13 points, 1 offensive and 6 defensive rebounds, 1 steal and would lead the team with three 3-pointers. Natalee Hakamaki rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals with 5 points, 4 offensive and 1 defensive rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Emmalee Hoover had 2 offensive and 2 defensive rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. Sascha Korpela added 1 offensive rebound, 1 assist, and 1 block to the teams' stats. Amber Collman added 1 offensive rebound, 2 assists and 1 steal. Unfortunately the Cardinals started off well in the tournament, their run was cut short as the COVID-19 outbreak led to the cancellation of the state tournament. The Cardinals ended their season with a 29-2 record.
