A holiday for giving thanks

Wick's World

November 30, 2017

The holiday called Thanksgiving is just what it says; it is a holiday for giving thanks. The first thing I would like to give thanks for is the 45-year relationship my wife and I have shared in which our tolerance of each other's tiny faults is the magic that has made this marriage work so well.

The next thing I would like to give thanks for is how lucky our nation has been to have the first 44 presidents.

One of the most important things in my life for which I have tremendous gratitude is music. I love music of all types and genres. I am thankful for rock and roll and the blues. I am thankful for country music and classical music, from Mozart to Bach.

I am thankful for the Mayberry-like town of Chamberlain, South Dakota, the little village sitting on the mighty Missouri River where I was fortunate to spend my childhood all the way up through high school graduation. I am equally thankful for the small town of Moose Lake, Minnesota, where I spent the next three decades raising my three sons in another Mayberry-like atmosphere.

I am thankful for one more geographical blessing by having the chance to visit Costa Rica, the only country I have been to that has no standing army. The healthy lifestyle I learned from that country has added years to my life.

I am thankful for my parents, whom all of my friends agreed were the greatest parents a person could have. Also, I am thankful for my children’s friends who tell them they are lucky to have parents like my wife and me. I give thanks to all of my friends and family, without whom life would have been a little less vibrant this year.

I am thankful for Phoenix, Arizona, the city that has risen from the desert and the place one of my sons calls home. For the past 10 years, we have been able to thank this wonderful holiday giving thanks with our close family.

I give thanks for the Minnesota sports teams that have given me so much pleasure this year. In particular, I thank the World Champion Minnesota Lynx basketball team, the over-achieving Minnesota Vikings, the high achieving Minnesota Gophers basketball team and the Minnesota Wild, all of whom have had great seasons (so far).

I give thanks that I still have my freedom of speech which allows me to write this column. I give thanks for my right to peaceful assembly and especially the right to peaceful protest. I, for one, take these rights seriously for one never knows when they could be taken away.

I give thanks to the new things in my life called Uber and Lyft, which has made getting around just a little bit easier. I also give thanks to the new things that are not in my life, such as sexual harassment. I give thanks for the return of joy at our airports that has been gone far too long.

Happy Thanksgiving and have a safe flight!
