On Thursday, October 26, the Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum cross country team was at the Cloquet Country Club for the Section 7A Championships. With the possible threat of nasty weather in the forecast, it was not looking like a nice day to run. Ultimately, however, the rain held off and the runners were finally going to be able to run on a dry course. With temps in the mid-40s and light winds, the day was made for running. The day's meet consisted of only varsity runners, each vying for a chance to continue on to the state meet. Only the top two teams and top eight runners, not on those teams, will continue on to state competition in Northfield.

The Rebels girls started the day's races. Last year, the team had a ninth place finish, but this year they jumped to sixth out of 20 schools and 108 runners present. The winner of the race was Ava Hill of Mesabi East in a time of 19:07.8, beating the second place runner by nearly 1 minute 11 seconds.

Leading the Rebels was Kelli Granquist, 20th in 21:38.1; Coriella Sheetz, 36th in 22:33.9; Lexi Tekippe, 46th in 22:56.8; Kyra Heaton, 47th in 22:59.9; Savannah Gamst, 52nd in 23:25.0; Delaney Koecher, 55th in 23:36.9; and Sarah Michels, 59th in 23:41.8. Not running were alternates Maddy Gamst and Meghan Granquist.

The Rebels boys were up next and fell off a little from last year's third place finish and ended up fourth out of 22 schools and 138 runners present. The winner of the race was Geno Uhrbom of GNK in a time of 16:28.0, beating the second place runner by nearly 38 seconds.

Rebel Ethan Olson was third in 17:09.8, 4 seconds behind second place. Lake Doran was 28th in 18:14.6; Maverick Koecher, 29th in 18:14.8; Danny Whited, 37th in 18:31.5; Johnathan Danelski, 47th in 18:52.8; Spencer Lower, 68th in 19:33.2; and Henry Collier, 81st in 19:49.2. The boys alternates were Mark Fossum and Tan Dipman, who had Henry Collier run for him due to illness.

Rebel Ethan Olson will continue on to run at the state meet on Saturday, November 4, at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The girls run at 1 p.m. and the boys run at 2 p.m.
