County supports broadband expansion

The Carlton County Board of Commissioners agreed to sponsor a Broadband Development Grant from the Department of Employment and Economic Development on behalf of Frontier Communications at their regular board meeting September 12. According to Connie Christensen, director of Carlton County Economic Development, if this grant request is successful, broadband services will be upgraded in some western Carlton County areas; $3 million was dedicated for this use by the current Legislature for statewide projects.

Chris Soderbloom received a conditional use permit for a fish house and dock manufacturing business in Red Clover Township at 1004 Hwy. 73, Cromwell. The business is moving out of the city of Cromwell. Soderbloom has 12 dealers in the Midwest and has those sources pick up his product. This is a father/son business and is located across Hwy. 73 from an existing mini-storage facility.

The county board approved shifting $61,500 to the 2017 building maintenance fund to cover, for example, the cost of jail roof repairs and a handicap accessibility entrance for the courthouse.

Word has come through the offices of Rep. Mike Sundin that the State Bonding Commission will be coming to Moose Lake to tour the Moose Lake Correctional Facility and Riverside Arena on the morning of Tuesday, September 26, 9:45-11:30 a.m. is scheduled for touring the facilities and looking at program needs.
