Girl injured at fair

August 24, 2017

According to news reports, 13-year-old Grace Bartz of Barnum was injured at the Carlton County Fair Sunday.

After just finishing her race, the horse Grace was riding caught her off guard when it made an abrupt turn. Grace fell to the side, with her foot caught in the stirrup, and landed on a metal fence below. During the incident, a main artery under her arm was cut. According to a CaringBridge journal entry Monday by Grace's mother, Jill Bartz, the horse drug Grace along the fence until a fellow horse racer's quick thinking saved her life by freeing her foot and using a piece of clothing as a tourniquet to attempt to stop the bleeding.

Medical personnel on site acted immediately and Life Flight transported her to the hospital where she underwent a 10 hour emergency surgery.

A gofundme campaign has been started to help defray mounting medical costs: http://www.gofundme.com/help-grace-heal.
