Rebels fall hard to Eskomos

April 20, 2017

The Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels boys baseball team fell hard in the home opener as they lost 13-1 in six innings to the Esko Eskomos in Moose Lake on Thursday, April 13. MLWR was out-hit 10-2. The Rebels committed five errors with four of those runners subsequently scoring. Esko had one error and that miscue did not result in a MLWR run.

The Eskomos improved to 2-0. The Rebels went to an even 2-2 record. MLWR lost 4-0, 17-7 and 7-5 to Esko last year.

Brody Kaldahl earned the win for Esko as he pitched five innings with nine strikeouts. Kaldahl walked just one and allowed only a triple, an infield hit and one run on a fielder's choice RBI.

Although senior Wyatt Lampel pitched two and two-thirds innings with two strikeouts and just one walk with only two singles and no runs, he was relieved by junior Ian Coil.

Coil had a rough outing as he pitched two and one-third innings. Coil struck out one with no walks, but 11 runs scored on one triple, two doubles, four singles and four errors.

Nick Wegge pitched one inning and struck out one and walked two. Esko added two runs on an infield single and a fielder's choice.

Esko had four successful steals. The Rebels did not attempt a steal. The Eskomos stranded nine runners, including seven in scoring position. MLWR stranded four runners, including one in scoring position.

Wyatt Lampel had a triple and scored a run on Thursday, April 13 in Moose Lake.

The Rebels' lone run came in the fourth inning as Lampel spoiled Kaldahl's possible bid for a no-hitter by lacing a tailing drive the opposite way that skipped past the right fielder to become a stand-up triple. Brendon Fogelberg followed Lampel's at-bat and ruined Kaldahl's shut-out with a fielder's choice RBI that scored Lampel from third base for 6-1.

Lampel reached on a walk in the first inning. Danny Whited got an infield single on a line drive off Kaldahl's glove in the fifth inning, but they were both stranded. Mark Fossum reached on a passed ball third strike in the sixth inning and Fogelberg reached on an error at second in that same inning, but they were both stranded as Esko exited one inning early with the 12-run win.

MLWR hosts Carlton on Thursday, April 20, in Moose Lake at 4:30 p.m. The Rebels nipped the Bulldogs in a close 12-10 contest last year. MLWR hosts Cook County on Thursday, April 27, at 4:30 p.m. The Vikings beat the Rebels 11-1 last year.
