Four MLA girls chosen for All-Star game

Four girls from the record-setting 20-6-1 Moose Lake Area Rebels were honored to be chosen to be on rosters for the K1 Northern Minnesota All-Star game held at Cloquet on Tuesday, February 28. Each roster consisted of two goalies, six defenseman and nine forwards.

Senior forward Jessica Bird, the area’s regular-season goals leader at 48 and points leader at 72, was on the Fire Roster. Senior forward Sage Gerard, tied for first in the area with 32 assists and in the sixth spot for points with 47, was also on the Fire Roster. Senior defenseman Jamie Bird, the Rebels fifth leading points-getter with 14 goals and five assists during the regular season for 19 points, was on the Ice Roster. Junior goalie Maddy Gamst, the area’s leader in saves percentage at .925 and in goals against average at 1.65, was also on the Ice Roster.

All four of the Rebels’ selections shined in an exciting back-and-forth game. With the Ice out-shooting the Fire 44-29, MLA’s Gamst and Grand Rapids’ Paige Hemphill combined to make 24 saves for the win for the Ice.

The Ice led 2-1 after the first period. The Fire’s Gerard was assisted by Jessica Bird to make it 2-2. The Fire scored again to make it 3-2. Bird and Gerard exchange roles, with Bird scoring and Gerard assisting, for 4-2. The Ice fired back and answered twice for 4-4 heading into the third period.

The Fire and Ice traded goals for 5-5 after regulation play. Neither team scored in overtime and it went to a three-round shootout. It was MLA’s defenseman Jamie Bird getting the only goal in the shootout to give the Ice the win.
