Moose Lake Area Rebels girls play in Schwan Cup

 


The Moose Lake Area girls hockey team shut out Irondale 4-0 in a Silver Division game at the Schwan Cup in Blaine on Monday, December 26. The Rebels did a great job in their own zone, allowing Irondale to get only eight shots on goals. Maddy Gamst earned her third shut out of the season with eight saves. The 11-1-1 Rebels out-shot Irondale 27-8 and MLA had one power play goal.

The Rebels' top three point-getters did the damage. Jessica Bird led MLA with two goals and two assists. Sage Gerard had three assists. Lauren Pederson scored two goals. Jamie Bird got her fourth assist of the season.

It was Pederson and Jessica Bird connecting for the first period’s only goal at 3:04. Pederson, assisted by Jessica Bird and Gerard, scored the second stanza’s lone goal at 10:05. Jessica Bird, Jamie Bird and Gerard combined for 3-0 at 5:34 of the third period. Jessica Bird and Gerard clicked for a power goal to polish off the 4-0 shut out at 9:00.

Rebels edged by Andover

The Moose Lake Area girls were edged 5-4 by Andover at the Schwan Cup in Blaine on Tuesday, December 27. Andover got one more goal than the Rebels in the first period and it held up to be the difference as the teams traded two goals and one goal each in the second and third periods, respectively.

Gamst took only her second loss of the season for the 11-2-1 Rebels as she had 29 saves with MLA getting out-shot 34-28. MLA had two plays goals and the Rebels also had a short handed goal. Andover’s goals were all even strength assisted efforts.

Gerard led the Rebels with one goal and two assists to improve to six goals and 24 assists for 30 points. Jessica Bird had a goal and an assist to go to 33 goals and 14 assists for 47 points. Jamie Bird scored her first goal of the year and got her fifth assist. Pederson scored her 10th goal of the season to go to 15 points. Abby Painovich got her seventh assist of the year.

Andover scored first at 5:53. MLA’s Pederson, Gerard and Painovich combined for 1-1 at 11:44. Andover got a goal at 15:20 for 2-1 that held up to be the game-winner.

Jessica Bird scored a power play goal, on an assist by Gerard, for 2-2 at 3:26 of the second period. Andover took a 3-2 lead at 8:21. Gerard, Jamie Bird and Jessica Bird clicked on a power play for 3-3 at 9:38. Andover answered at 14:49 for 4-3.

Andover scored for 5-3 at 12:33 of the third period. Jamie Bird scored an unassisted short-handed goal at 16:35 for final 5-4 tally.

MLA nipped by Anoka

in third place game

Although the Moose Lake Area girls hockey team out-shot the opponents 32-25, the Rebels were nipped 2-1 by Anoka in third place Schwan Cup Silver Division action at Blaine on Wednesday, December 28. Gamst took the loss with 23 saves for the 11-3-1 Rebels.

Anoka scored an assisted goal at 12:11 of the first period. Anoka got the goal that would hold up to be the game-winner on another assisted effort at 9:28 of the second period for 2-0. MLA was able to answer as Jamie Benzie scored an unassisted goal at 16:45 for 2-1. It was Benzie’s seventh goal to take her to 11 points on the season. The Rebels came up a goal short as the third period was scoreless.

The Rebels host Princeton on Thursday, January 5, at Riverside Arena in Moose Lake at 7:30 p.m. The next home game is not until Saturday, January 28, when MLA hosts the International Falls Broncos for a 2 p.m. matinee.

The MLA girls were ranked 15th according to Class A Let's Play Hockey on December 30.
