Season of giving

Carol Jelinek

Five area families received an early visit from Santa, thanks to Willow River School teachers and staff. More than $1,400 was donated to buy presents for the families in need. Some of that amount was matched by the Willow River Education Association (WREA). The Adopt a Family annual effort is a favorite holiday activity for the district. Pictured, Willow River teachers teamed up for a buying spree after consulting lists provided by the five families for holiday gifts and needs. They are: Jeanne Mach, Lisa Beise, Teresa Joyal, Tana Mack, Kari Martichuski, Meghan Kazmeirczak, Lindsay Emert, Jessica Engelson, Majella Coil and Bambi Neumann.

First graders at Barnum Elementary School learn about needs, wants and scarcity in the world. They chose to donate money and collect goods for the Friends of Animals Humane Society of Carlton County. The students collected $143 and a full box of toys for animals in need.
