Rebels beat Storm for second time

 


The Moose Lake Area girls hockey team beat the North Shore Storm for the second time this season. After winning the home opener 9-1 over the Storm on November 11, this time the score on the road was much closer with the Rebels beating North Shore only 5-3 on Tuesday, December 20.

Although the 9-1-1 Rebels remain ranked 17th as of Wednesday, December 21, by Let’s Play Hockey, they are listed at 10th in the State Class A QRF (Quality Rating Formula) at 50.7. MLA’s biggest local rival, 8-3-0 Proctor-Hermantown, was tied for 5th in the QRF at 61.4.

Period-by-period, the Rebels out-shot the Storm 13-3, 15-12, 12-4 for 40-19 for the game. MLA went 0-for-1 on the power play while the penalty continued to do a great job by blanking the Storm on three advantages.

Maddy Gamst earned her eighth win with 16 saves and is tied for 8th in the state with those wins. Gamst’s 1.65 goals against puts her in the 24th spot and her saves percentage of .927 puts her in 27th spot in that category.

So far this season, the Rebels are out-scoring opponents 47-20. MLA is out-shooting its opponents 311-253 at this point.

The Rebels did a particularly good job sharing the scoring and the assists to get the job done against the Storm. Jessica Bird had two goals and one assist. Sage Gerard had one goal and two assists. Jamie Benzie had one goal and one assist. Josie Benzie also had one goal, that stood up to be the game-winner, and she had one assist. Ruby Mohelsky had two assists. Jamie Bird had one assist.

Bird stays first the state with 26 goals and she is third in the state with 36 points. Gerard’s 18 assists puts her in sixth place and her 23 points puts her in the 31st place. Other top Rebels points-getter include the following: Lauren Pederson six goals and five assists for 11 points; Jamie Benzie with six goals and four assists for 10 points; Ruby Mohelsky with three goals and four assists for seven points; Abby Painovich with no goals, but six assists and Kiersten Evenson with no goals, but four assists.

The Rebels scored the only goal of the first period against the Storm. It was by Jamie Benzie, from Mohelsky and Gerard at 9:00.

The Storm made it 1-1 with an assisted goal at 0:53 and took a 2-1 lead with an assisted goal at 3:18. Gerard, assisted by Jessica Bird, tied it 2-2 at 5:34. North Shore took back the lead with an assisted goal for 3-2 at 14:16. MLA got the game back even at 3-3 as Jessica Bird, assisted Josie Benzie and Jamie Benzie at 15:27.

Josie Benzie’s game-winner for 4-3 came at 8:25 and was assisted by Mohelsky. Jessica Bird’ second goal of the game for some cushion on the score to increase the lead to 5-3 came at 14:55 with Gerard earning her second assist of the game.

The 9-1-1 MLA varsity and the undefeated 10-0-0 Rebels junior varsity host Princeton on Thursday, January 5 with the JV game scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and the varsity puck drop to follow at about 7:30 p.m. Reportedly, Elea Anderson is leading the JV with six or seven goals.
