Moose Lake Area girls win by one

Moose Lake Area Rebel Michaela Belanger dominates the puck in the November 17 game against Cambridge-Isanti-Mora-Pine City.

The Moose Lake Area Rebels girls hockey team notched their second consecutive victory as they took a close one with a 4-3 win over Cambridge-Isanti/Mora/Pine City at Riverside Area in Moose Lake on Thursday, November 17.

The Rebels were outshot by the opponents 27-20, but Maddy Gamst made 24 saves, including stopping one penalty shot in the first period, for the win. The opponents had three penalties while the Rebels had four infractions. But MLA went 2-for-3 on the power play while the opponents only cashed in once.

Freshman forward Jamie Benzie scored two goals for the second game in a row. Junior forward Lauren Pederson had the game-winning goal and she had an assist. Senior defenseman Kiersten Evenson had two assists.

The opponents got an assisted goal at 2:40. MLA answered at 6:19 as Benzie scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 1-1 after one period of play.

Cambridge-Isanti got an assisted power play goal at 8:09 and an unassisted short-handed goal at 8:46 to go up 3-1. Jessica Bird scored a power play goal, assisted by Evenson and Pederson, to get within one goal at 9:52. Benzie got her second goal of the game to knot it up at 3-3 at 11:05.

The only goal of the third period happened just 14 seconds into the period and it was a power play game-winner by Pederson, with Evenson getting the assist, for the 4-3 victory as the Rebels improved to 2-0 on the young year.

After two away games, the Rebels will host the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears on Tuesday, November 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Riverside Arena. MLA hosts South St. Paul on Friday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. The Rebels are right back at it with a late afternoon home game against Dodge County on Saturday, December 3 with a 5 p.m. varsity puck drop.

MLA was ranked No. 18 in the state in the most recent Class 1A poll.
