Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum Rebels runners Ethan Olson and Savannah Gamst are state-bound.

The Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum Rebels varsity runners were off to the Cloquet Country Club for the Section 7A Cross Country Championships on Thursday, October 27. With cloudy skies, a little breeze and temps in the mid 40s, the runners had a day made for fast racing. With the course in excellent shape, 12 of the 14 Rebels runners had a personal record for the season and 11 out of the 14 made a career personal record (PR) time.

The Rebels varsity girls team had a ninth place finish out of 15 teams and 107 runners total in the race. Leading her team was Savannah Gamst who qualified for the state meet with her fifth place finish in 20:10.3, which is a new school 5K record for the girls. Following were Rebels teammates Laya Danelski, 35th in 22:03.1; Sophie Richardson, 60th in 23:05.5; Lexi Tekippe, 61st in 23:05.7; Kelli Granquist, 67th in 23:24.2; Sydney Bexell, 69th in 23:29.8; and Lily Geil, 99th in 28:43.8.

The Rebels varsity boys team were on a mission at the section meet this year, to beat their rival team from Esko. When the final results were tallied, it was the Rebels with 119 points and Esko with 122 points. This was good enough to give the Rebels boys team a third place finish behind Ely in second and Greenway/Nashwuak-Keewatin in first out of 17 teams.

With a total of 126 runners in the race, Rebel Ethan Olson led the team by becoming the Section Champion and state-qualifier with a time of 16:18.4, which is also a new school 5K record for the boys. Following were Rebels teammates Mark Fossum, 20th in 18:02.2; Joe Bustrak, 25th in 18:10.1; Lake Doran, 36th in 18:22.3; Tan Dipman, 37th in 18:23.0; Danny Whited, 40th in 18:26.3; and Jacob Danelski, 47th in 18:38.5.

Next up for Gamst and Olson is the Minnesota State Cross Country Meet on Saturday, November 5, at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The boys will race at 10 a.m. followed by the girls at 11 a.m. The Rebels and fans wish both runners good luck at state.
