Barnum celebrates the win over McGregor October 24.

The Barnum Lady Bombers showed up ready to play volleyball as they hosted the Mercuries of McGregor in the first round of the Section 7A tournament October 24.

From the beginning, it looked as if the Bombers were prepared as this was a rematch from just a couple games ago. In the last meeting with McGregor, the Mercuries had their way with the Bombers. The Mercuries defeated the Bombers in four sets.

This time, the Lady Bombers put on a much better showing as nearly every Bomber put points in the kill column.

The first set showed the Bombers jumping to the early lead, as they kept the Mercuries less than three points from catching the Bombers. The Bombers walked away with the 25-18 victory in the first set.

The second set had the Bombers again taking it to the Mercuries, as the Bombers jumped to an early lead and never looked back. The Mercuries tried to find a rhythm to fight the Bombers, but it seemed the Bombers could do no wrong in the second set, defeating the Mercuries 25-12.

The third set had the Mercuries taking the early lead, forcing the Bombers to play catch-up. The Bombers found themselves looking at a 9-5 deficit when Coach Newman called a time-out to settle down the Bombers team. From the time-out, the Lady Bombers climbed out of the hole to tie the score and finally take the lead. The Bombers took the third and final set 25-18 to advance to the next round of tournament play on Wednesday, October 26, at Carlton High School to take on the Bulldogs.

The Bombers were led by Jessica Bird with eight kills, three ace serves and 20 digs. Megan Laine added six kills, one ace serve and seven digs. Lexi Bonneville found herself adding five kills, one ace serve and 13 digs. Emily Miletich added in four kills, four ace serves, four assists and 15 digs. Lea Peterson add three kills, eight digs and 33 assists. Lauren Peaney added one kill, two digs and one assist. Aleah Orlowski put up one kill and 11 digs. Meghan Liimatainen cemented in her position as setter with 30 assists and one ace serve.
