The Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum varsity boys cross country team takes second in Mora. They are, front: Jacob Danelski, Tan Dipman, Lake Doran and Danny Whited. Back: Aaron Bode, Ethan Olson, Mark Fossum and Joe Bustrak.

The Rebels of Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum were in Mora Tuesday, September 13, for the Mustang Invite. It was a terrific day for runners and spectators, with temps in the low 60s, a cool breeze and partly cloudy skies. The runners had a great day and their race times showed it. Interestingly, the top 25 junior high and top 15 junior varsity and varsity runners received a large cookie instead of ribbons or medals. From what this writer heard, the coach was not offered even a bite from one of the 12 cookies won by Rebels runners.

In the junior high girls 2.5K race, Steph Maciej was 42nd in 12:17 and Anna Molis 58th in 15:43.

The boys junior high race had Jonathon Danelski sixth in 9:13, Grant Pettit 17th in 9:31, Levi Granda 67th in 11:13, Anson Vargo 78th in 11:55 and Carl Halverson 79th in 11:56.

For the junior varsity 5K race, the girls had Meghan Granquist 11th in 25:34, Kelii Granquist 12th in 25:35, Giannalisa Siebott 18th in 26:31, Lily Geil 36th in 28:46 and Maddy Stadin 45th in 33:01.

In the boys JV race, it was Henry Collier sixth in 19:11, David Webb eighth in 19:47, Michael Olson 11th in 20:12, Maverick Koecher 13th in 20:27, Wheeler Anderson 16th in 20:34, Tim Vogt 21st in 20:47, Levi Skelton 40th in 21:38, Sam Stadin 58th in 22:55, Nate Jungers 70th in 23:40, Spencer Lower 72nd in 24:10 and Caleb Kinnel 82nd in 26:00.

The varsity girls had a seventh place team finish with Savannah Gamst 11th in 21:23, Laya Danelski 36th in 23:31, Charis Blacklock 38th in 23:39, Sydney Bexell 39th in 23:44, Coriella Sheetz 49th in 24:24, Lexi Tekippe 51st in 24:32, Sophie Richardson 53rd in 24:36 and Lauren Hartman 55th in 24:39.

The varsity boys team finished second out of 11 teams, behind Mora, who has been the state champions the last two years for Class A. Mora's top five runners all finished in the top nine spots. Rebel Ethan Olson had a third place finish, behind Mora's top two runners, in a school record time of 16:40, followed by Joseph Bustrak l0th in 18:01, Tan Dipman 15th in 18:10, Lake Doran 25th in 18:51, Danny Whited 30th in 19:03, Jacob Danelski 33rd in 19:28, Mark Fossum 40th in 19:28 and Aaron Bode 41st in 19:29.

After the meet when asked if he was surprised by any of the runners now that three meets have been completed, coach Whelan said, "All the kids are doing a great job so far this season. But looking at three boys I would have to say Tan Dipman is one who has dropped his time from 20:20s last year and just ran an 18:10. Another would be Danny Whited who ran a 20:04 last year and is already down to a 19:03. One other would be Lake Doran with a 20:30 last year and has gotten down to 18:51 so far this year. For three girls it would be Charis Blacklock, Lexi Tekippe and Coriella Sheetz. Each has improved this year over their PRs, personal records, with Lexi and Charis taking over a minute off and Coriella almost two minutes and we are not even half way through the season."

The Rebels cross country team is off to a good start this season with six meets left before the section championships on October 27. The next meet was set for September 20 in Grand Rapids, followed by the Milaca Mega Meet on Saturday, September 24.
