Man who killed deputy arrested again

Scott Arlen Lange

On August 17 at 11:19 p.m. an Isanti County deputy located a vehicle believed to be occupied by a suspect, Scott Arlen Lange, who has several outstanding felony warrants.

He followed the vehicle south on Highway 47 and the vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed. The suspect turned east on Highway 95 to County Road 65 (341st Ave. NW). He then traveled north on County Road 1 at speeds of over 100 mph. The vehicle then turned westbound on County Road 6 and south on Lily Street and pulled into an address where the driver fled on foot into a cornfield. K-9 officer, Kojak, was deployed to locate the suspect in the cornfield.

Once deputies located Kojak and the suspect in the cornfield, they found Lange grabbing the K9 by the throat. K9 deputy Jonathan Vandervegt was able to release the dog from Lange who continued to fight with the officers and the K9. Kojak got a strong hold on the suspect's leg and officers were able to handcuff him. The suspect continued to refuse to comply with any commands officers gave him and made threats towards the officers, later spitting blood at one officer.

Deputies took Lange to Cambridge Medical Center for treatment of the bite wounds from the K9 and then transported him to the Isanti County Jail. Kojak sustained a deep scratch by his eye from the struggle.

Lange has been charged with two counts of felony fleeing in a motor vehicle, fifth degree drug possession, three counts of felony assault on a police officer, one count of harming a police dog, as well as multiple felony warrants from other agencies.

Lange is no stranger to law enforcement. On August 24, 1991, he beat Deputy Michael Morrow of the Pine County Sheriff's Office to death with a flashlight following a traffic stop. He went back to prison in 2008 for violating probation and committing another assault offense.
