McTeacher Night benefits student

April 28 a handful of Willow River school staff don aprons at McDonald's in Moose Lake during a McTeacher Night to raise funds for student Kole Harris who was recently diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease that will eventually leave him blind.

Kole Harris, a 10th grader at Willow River Schools, was recently diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease that will eventually leave him completely blind. After Kole courageously shared the news with his classmates, students around the school started asking what they could do to help out.

They started asking questions like, "What would Kole like to see before he cannot see any longer?" And, "What's his bucket list and how can we help him see those things while he can still enjoy them?"

Shortly thereafter McDonald's in Moose Lake proposed an annual McTeacher Night fundraising event. The students and staff agreed to host that event in Kole's honor. So, on April 28, a handful of Willow River staff donned aprons at McDonald's and took orders, bussed tables and made ice cream cones in an effort to raise money and awareness for Kole.

They expected to maybe make $500-$600 between tips and the 20 percent of sales McDonald's was going to give. The McTeacher Night was a much bigger success than could ever have been imagined. Cars were lined up down the road and the place was packed.

Kole was presented with a check for $2,000. First stop on his bucket list is Clarion, Iowa, to see the world's largest farm tractor, "Big Bud." Hopefully the money raised will go a long way to supporting Kole's travels and adventures. More events are in the works thanks to the wonderful community.

Kole's mom, Becky, would like to pass on her sincere gratitude to all who took orders, flipped burgers, purchased a meal or spread the word in support of her son.
