The Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels sixth-grade girls had a long weekend of basketball action with two tournaments played. They took second in the February 27 Sweet 16 Basketball Tourney in Eveleth. They are, front: Janna Bode and Maci Kukuk. Middle: Grace Jordan, Alivia Mallory and Simone Pruette. Back: Coach Shawn Bode, Natalie Mikrot, Annika Meyer, JoJo Fossum, Ava North and Coach Scott Olson.

The Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels sixth-grade girls traveling basketball team went to the Sweet 16 Basketball Tourney on Saturday, February 27, in Eveleth. This event has been put on by Eveleth the last 15 years, bringing in 16 teams from the surrounding area for an all day tournament.

In the first game the Rebels met Eveleth No. 1 and started off strong for a 29-7 win.

Moving on they met Mesabi East in the second round. This was no easy game with the lead going back and forth. The girls held on for a very close win of 23-22.

In the third game they met another strong team from Proctor to see who would play in the championship game. Once again it was a back and forth game. For the third time, however, the Rebels girls came away with a win with a score of 29-26.

Next was the championship game against a very tough Esko team. This tournament pulls out all the tricks, shutting off all the lights, with music playing, put a spotlight on each girl as they came to center court and announced each player's name. Once again it was a close game with MLWR down by two at the half.

In the second half the girls faltered a little and Esko took advantage, rolling to a 24-41 win.

Even though the girls took second place it could be seen they had a very fun day.

As the awards were given out they started with a special one given to the team that showed the most sportsmanship in the players, coaches and even the fans. The referees cast the votes for the winner. This year's winner was the MLWR team. We were proud to be given such an honor.

Grand Rapids Classic

The next day the girls played at the Grand Rapids Classic Basketball Tourney. After such a long day the girls were wondering if they would be able to handle another one.

In the first game they had a tough Grand Rapids team that started off strong and built a quick lead. The girls buckled down, fought back and stunned their opponent, winning 32-30.

In the second game they once again found themselves down by as much as 14 points. Doing their best they fought back but came up short losing to Cass Lake 27-29.

The third game found the girls hoping for one last win for the day. But it was not to be with the girls finally running out of energy and losing 13-31 to Deer River.

The coaches would just like to say they could not be more proud of the girls and how they played this long weekend and look forward to the last few games of the season with them in the coming weeks.
