Rebels runner Ethan Olson takes first

For the second time this season, Ethan Olson finishes in first place. The first time was at the GNK meet in Coloraine and the second at the J.A. Curran in Grand Rapids.

On Tuesday, September 22, the Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum cross country team was in Grand Rapids for the J.A. Curran CC Invite. Less than a week after getting drenched in rain, the weather was great to run in with temps in the mid-60s and slight cloud cover.

The top 15 junior varsity runners received ribbons and the varsity runners placing sixth through 15th received ribbons with the top five getting medals.

For junior high girls, Faith Blomquist was eighth in 15:42, Ella Rhoades 13th in 16:52, Kelli Granquist 20th in 17:52 and Coriella Sheetz 23rd in 17:28. In the boys junior high race it was Tan Dipman seventh in 12:54 and Maverick Koecher 13th in 14:01.

Though the junior varsity team standings were not counted during this meet, it was totaled and found that both the girls and boys had first place finishes. On the girls side it was Charis Blacklock first in 25:48, Mallory Agurkis second in 25:49, Chloe Gamst fifth in 26:34, Lexi Tekippe sixth in 26:34, Lily Geil 11th in 30:17 and Alexis Oswald 12th in 31:05.

For the boys junior varsity team it was Mark Fossum third in 19:48, Tim Vogt fourth in 19:52, Nick Furey sixth in 19:55, Jacob Danelski eighth in 19:58, Lake Doran 15th in 20:39, Danny Whited 20th in 21:48, Cooper Bexell 23rd in 22:11, Levi Skelton 28th in 22:46, Michael Olson 34th in 23:32 and Sean Jungers 44th in 30:35.

The girls varsity placed fifth out of 10 teams with Sydney Bexell sixth in 21:06, Savannah Gamst 17th in 22:21, Nicole Tekippe 21st in 22:43, Sarah Michels 29th in 23:30, Sophie Richardson 39th in 24:10, Laya Danelski 41st in 24:37 and Meghan Granquist 46th in 25:24.

The varsity boys finished third out of 11 teams. Ethan Olson was first in 17:07, Joe Bustrak sixth in 17:54, Henry Collier 20th in 18:56, Kyle Skelton 21st in 19:02, Aaron Bode 27th in 19:15, Casey Koll 36th in 19:29 and David Webb 38th in 19:41.

On Saturday, September 26, the Rebels were in Milaca for the Milaca Mega Meet, rated the largest race of its kind in the country. The weather started out cool and foggy in the morning, but by the time the first race started the sun popped out and the temps started to rise to a high near 80 by the time the varsity races started around noon.

With stiff competition at such a cross country meet, the runners in each race did their best to finish in a fast time. The eighth-grade girls team finished 13th out of 15 teams. The ninth-grade boys team was 19th out of 35 teams. The boys junior varsity team had a 24th place finish out of 49 teams. In the varsity girls 2A race they placed 16th out of 20 teams with Sydney Bexell receiving a ribbon for her 17th place finish. The varsity boys improved from a 15th place finish last year to a seventh place this year out of 22 teams with Olson receiving a ribbon for 10th place and Bustrak for 15th place.

Next up for the Rebels will be the Swain Invitational at Enger Golf Course in Duluth on Saturday, October 3. The past three years the weather has not been very enjoyable as a spectator or a runner. Let's hope this year is different.
