Rebels boys runners finish second

The Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum cross country team was at Pincushion Trails in Grand Marais on Thursday, September 3 for the Cook County Viking Challenge.

All runners did their best during a day with stiff competition from Duluth East who took first place in four out of five team races.

The varsity girls placed sixth with Sydney Bexell in 14th at 22:28, Savannah Gamst in 32nd at 24:06, Nicole Tekippe in 36th at 24:47, Sophie Richardson in 39th at 25:20, Sarah Michels in 43rd at 25:39, Kennedy Bryant in 51st at 27:34 and Meghan Granquist in 55th at 27:58.

The varsity boys had a second place finish behind Duluth East but in front of Cook County and Proctor. Ethan Olson came in fourth at 17:39, Joe Bustrak in seventh at 18:31, Nick Furey in 18th at 19:52, Kyle Skelton in 22nd at 20:08, Aaron Bode in 23rd at 20:10, Henry Collier in 26th at 20:20 and David Webb in 30th at 21:03.

Top 15 in each race received medals for their accomplishment. For the girls that was Bexell for 14th and for the boys it was Olson for fourth and Bustrak for seventh. Also receiving a medal was girls junior varsity runner Lauren Hartman for her 10th place finish.

The cross country runners are led by head coach Adam Whelan and assistant coaches Sarah Thompson and Gage Mohelsky. Also new to the team is sophomore Paula Vollmuth who is an exchange student from Germany.

The next race for the Rebels runners is Thursday, September 10 in Coleraine.
