Ally Bode pitches a win against the Two Harbor Agates on Thursday, May 21.

The Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels took on the Two Harbors Agates in the first game of Elite Eight double elimination playoff action and won 5-1 on Thursday, May 21 at Braun Park in Cloquet. Ally Bode struck out 11 and allowed only three hits and four walks for MLWR. Suzy Grutkoski and Jessica Paull each had two RBIs for the Rebels.

Bode came out strong as she struck out the side. The Agates returned the favor with a 1-2-3 inning.

Bode got one looking, but hit one with a pitch, walked one and had a wild pitch to load the bases. The base runner at third was nearly caught in a run down with a missed bunt attempt. An RBI single went to right for 1-0. Morgan Prachar stepped on the plate for a force out and fired to Paull at third for a tag out and a double play.

Paull grounded to third. Laura Walker singled into left and Marissa Mikrot singled through the middle. Josie Benzie hit into a force at third. The runners advanced to third on a wild pitch but Nicole Newham grounded to second to strand two in scoring position.

Paull had one get by her and Grutkoski was almost successful in backing up the error. A steal and a walk preceded a strikeout. A fly went to center and the runners tagged up for runners on the corners. A steal attempt was gunned down by Prachar.

Jamie Benzie softly lined to third and Grutkoski grounded to second. Bode reached on an error at second. With Lauren Pederson up, a mishandled pitch allowed Bode to take second. Pederson worked for a walk. With Paul up, a wild pitch put runners on second and third. Paull delivered with a two-RBI single up the middle for 2-1. Walker singled but Mikrot popped to the pitcher.

Bode hit a batter, but got the next to pop back to the circle and fanned one. A spinner down the first base line was a smart tag by Newham.

Josie Benzie grounded back to the pitcher, Newham fouled out to the catcher and Jamie Benzie was caught watching.

A bunt single was the Agates' second hit. Grutkoski turned a nifty unassisted double play. Bode got her seventh strikeout by freezing an Agates on a nice change-up.

Grutkoski pasted a stand-up double to the gap in left. Bode chopped a single into left. Pederson's RBI sacrifice fly made it 3-1. Paull lined out and Bode was doubled up off first.

A stand-up triple to right was the third hit off Bode. She followed by hitting her third batter of the game and a steal followed. Bode struck out the next three she faced to pitch out of trouble.

Walker grounded to short. Mikrot got caught watching. Josie Benzie singled through the left side. On a grounder by Newham, Two Harbors tried to get the lead runner but was unsuccessful. The same happened with Jamie Bennie. Grutkoski smacked a two-RBI single for 5-1.

A pop out was taken by Newham. Bode notched her eleventh strikeout. She walked her fourth. Pederson retreated and made a great running and reaching catch in center field.
