Porter James MacDonald, the first baby born in Mercy's new Birthing Center, is pictured with his parents, Sarah and Darren MacDonald, and attending physician Dr. Chris Thiessen, Gateway Family Health Clinic.

Sarah and Darren MacDonald of Kerrick are the proud parents of the first baby born in Mercy Hospital's new Birthing Center in the newly opened addition.

Their son, Porter James, was born at 5:47 a.m. on January 19, weighing 7 pounds, 2 ounces and measuring 19 inches long. Dr. Chris Thiessen, Gateway Family Health Clinic, was the attending physician.

Mercy's new birthing suites are designed to create a relaxing, home-like atmosphere for new families. The spacious, private rooms, complete with spa-type whirlpool, include additional amenities to foster a comfortable stay for the family.

"We are so pleased with our new Birthing Center; it is a quiet, calming space," said Rhonda Skelton, RN, OB Nurse Manager. "Our suites offer all the comforts of home with the best in modern technology. The new space complements our family oriented approach to care, with many amenities in place so a family's birthing experience is a special one. With the same nurse caring for both mom and baby, we provide a lot of personal attention to our new families."

In addition to the free car seat given to all families who give birth at Mercy, the MacDonald family received special gifts from the hospital and the Mercy-Augustana Auxiliary in recognition of the new unit's first birth.
