Accidental shot kills hunter

 


Carlton County dispatch received a call at 10:25 a.m. Sunday, November 9 that a male had accidentally shot himself in his deer stand in rural Carlton County and was deceased.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene and conducted an investigation. The deceased male was identified as 69-year-old Robert Duane Peterson of Nowthen. The deputies learned Peterson was dropped off by his son at the deer stand at 6:30 a.m. His son went to retrieve him at 10:25 a.m. and found his father deceased. The investigation showed Peterson had accidentally shot himself in the chest with a .243 caliber Winchester Model 70 bolt action rifle.

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Enforcement Division, Cromwell Ambulance and Kettle River First Responders.

In light of this tragic death, the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to follow safe gun handling rules:

1. Treat every gun as if it is loaded.

2. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

3. Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

4. Keep the gun unloaded until you are ready to use it.

5. Identify your target and what is beyond it.

6. Know how to operate your gun safely and be sure it is safe to use.

7. Only use the correct ammunition for your gun.

8. Wear eye and ear protection.

9. Never use alcohol or drugs that can impair normal mental or physical abilities.

10. Keep guns secured from unauthorized persons.

11. Follow all state hunting laws.

12. Make absolutely certain your gun is unloaded when you clean it. Triple check it.
