Avoid winter weather risks, hazards

Colette Stadin

The region is blanketed with snow Monday in an early snowstorm, just in time for "Minnesota Winter Hazard Awareness Week," set for November 10-14.

The Minnesota Department of Homeland Security Emergency Management (MN HSEM) has designated the week of November 10–14 as "Minnesota Winter Hazard Awareness Week." Each day of the week addresses a different and specific topic with the goal of giving the general public tips on how to reduce or avoid the risks and hazards associated with winter weather.

Winter Weather Awareness Week topics

- Monday, November 10: Winter storms - How winter storms form, warning and alerts, extreme cold and heavy ice and snow.

- Tuesday, November 11: Outdoor winter safety - Thin ice, keeping children safe, access and functional needs, winter sports and activities, frostbite and hypothermia and snow shoveling.

- Wednesday, November 12:

Winter fire safety - Heating, cooking, holiday fire safety and resources from the state fire marshal.

- Thursday, November 13: Indoor winter safety - Carbon monoxide - the deadly winter hazard, carbon monoxide alarms, mold, chemical and environmental exposure and radon.

- Friday, November 14: Winter driving - Winter survival kits for your vehicle, dialing 911 on a cell phone, 5-1-1 information systems and snowplows safety.

Many of us enjoy winter activities such as snowmobiling, skiing, skating and ice fishing, but Minnesota winters can make those activities hazardous to those who are unprepared. It is therefore important to take a few moments to review the charts, checklists, and other informational resources located in the HSEM Winter Weather Safety website to make your winter a safe and enjoyable one (
