MLWR Rebels volleyball has talent

The Moose Lake/Willow River varsity volleyball team.

The 2014 Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels volleyball team brings back three talented individuals from a team that had the best record since 2000. The biggest aspect that head coach Beckie Jackson, in her fourth year at the helm, will have to work on will be timing.

Jackson's team record last year was 16-11. "That's the best record since 2000 when that group of girls went to state," she said. "We have 35 girls in grades 9-12 and that's about average. We brought up one girl from eighth grade and no cuts were needed so that was nice. We have three girls back who played significantly for us, other than that we have a lot of first-timers. We will work on cleaning things up and on pace. Our returning starts are Corrina Cisar on the outside, Adri Jusczak on the right side and Lauren Ross a setter. Assisting them will be Libby Ring, Scarlett Anderson and Tayler Smith. They will all see time in the middle. Maddie Ross will play libero and Sage Gerard and Ally Bode will be outside."

The coach will switch things up some this year. "We will run a 5-1 this year," Jackson said. "We will have Allie Riihiluoma in the back row. This is my fourth year coaching and it's a strength in that we have known each other that long. Last year, that was a strength for us. We are serving well and the girls have learned how to hit spots. The team chemistry is very good; they really care about each other. Our serve return is something we will work on and that will take some time. We will work on our overall timing. We have potential to play to big or to play scrappy when we need to."

Jackson looked to the rest of the league. "Esko is always very competitive," she stated. "Aitkin is new on our schedule and will be good. South Ridge is also new for us. This is the first group of eighth graders I've seen all the way through so I'd hope a good year for us."
