Barnum U16 softball comes up short
Barnum's Lea Peterson scored three times against Northwestern.
The Barnum U16 softball team advanced to the second round of tournaments due to a bye, because the team from Esko dropped out of the tournament.
The ladies from Barnum then played against Northwestern. Barnum's Lea Peterson was first to strike as she advanced to first base off a wild pitch that hit her. That seemed to fire her up as she was not content staying on first and soon was able to steal second and then third.
Bailey Wheeler stepped up to the plate and drove Lea home for the first run of the evening.
Barnum continued to fight but the inning came to an end with one run.
Northwestern took their turn at bat and tied the game up. The next inning was scoreless.
In the top of the third inning, it was Peterson once again getting to first base, and again she was the thorn in the side of the Northwestern team as she got the opportunity to slide past the catcher for the second score for Barnum.
This time, the Northwestern team answered back in a big way and the ladies from Barnum struggled to stop the attack.
Northwestern scored nine runs before Barnum could stop them, giving Northwestern a 10-2 lead.
In the final inning for Barnum, Peterson again got on base and used her speed to her advantage, getting the final score for the ladies of Barnum.
Barnum had an incredible evening of defense except for the inning where there seemed to be no way to stop Northwestern.
Wheeler, Mallory Agurkis and Peterson all had some great catches to show Northwestern that Barnum was there to play. Liz Carlson had a phenomenal night behind the plate as she stopped nearly every pitch sent her way. Carlson also had quite the diving catch to prevent Northwestern from scoring.
Barnum did have other opportunities to score, but just could not find a way to bring the ladies in. Barnum's season ended with the 10-3 loss to Northwestern.
