Rebels golf season winding down, Loehlein continues to tee it up
Sage Gerard, Future-Hope Vang, and Lindsay Loehlein advanced to the Section 7A Golf Championships. Loehlein advances to the state golf meet to be held June 10-11.
The Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels golf teams had respectable seasons despite the fact that the flu bug hit them at the wrong time.
The girls finished fifth in the nine-team Great River Conference while the boys finished third. The girls had a regular season record of five wins and three losses, while the boys finished 7-1.
On the day of the 18-hole conference championship, Future-Hope Vang and Gavin Douglas came down with the flu and did not play. Their steady scoring was missed as they were still in a battle for conference titles. Vang and Douglas would have made all-conference had they played.
All-conference players included Lindsay Loehlein, Grant Douglas, Gabe Douglas and Zach Schaumburg.
Seniors Trent Autio, Grant Douglas and Schaumburg played six years with skill and integrity for the Rebels golf team. "We wish them well as they pursue further educational opportunities," said coach Steve Mokros.
At the section meet held at the Pokegama Golf Course in Grand Rapids, three girls and two boys made it to the second round, which included 44 golfers who made the first day cut. State-bound Loehlein had a two-day total of 181 (ninth overall), Sage Gerard 207 (27th), Vang 209 (28th), Gabe Douglas 165 (28th) and Grant Douglas 171 (37th).
The state tournament will be held in Jordan on June 10 and 11 at The Ridges of Sand Creek Golf Course. Admission is free.
