The Barnum Bombers golf teams headed to Virginia for the Section 7A golf tournament.
The ladies hit the course one player short as Jessica Bird was unable to compete. Kelsey Timm led the Bombers after the first day, shooting a 101 - 47 on the front nine and a 54 on the back nine. Brandi Lekander walked off the greens with a score of 106 - shooting a 53 on the front nine and also a 53 on the back nine. Next it was Jamie Bird coming in with a 107 - 54 on the front and a 53 on the back nine. Geana Guillard was the fourth member of the Bombers team with a 112 - 52 on the front nine and a 60 on the back nine. Eighth-grader Madeline Nelson was the final competitor for the Bombers, with a score of 125- 58 on the front nine and 67 on the back nine.
The Bombers ended the first day of competition with an 11-stroke lead over the No. 2 team, Mille Lacs.
The second day of competition had the ladies on the course again, but this time it was Lekander leading the way for the Bombers, shooting a 100 - 48 on the front and a 52 on the back nine. Next it was Jamie Bird with a 104 - 50 on the front and a 54 on the back nine. Timm walked off the green shooting a 105 - 50 on the front and a 55 on the back nine. Nelson came up big for the Bombers, shaving 14 strokes off of her previous day's score with a 111 - 59 on the front and 52 on the back nine. Guillard ended the day with a 115 - 54 on the front and 61 on the back nine.
With the incredible improvement of Nelson, the Bombers tied the second day scores with Mille Lacs, which meant the Bombers took a two-day score of 846, while Mille Lacs' two-day score was 857, allowing the Bombers to advance to state competition on June 10 and 11 at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker.
With the win, the Bombers' girls golf program is showing improvement, as two of the members advanced to state tournament play last year in the individual competition.
The Bombers boys golf team again had a strong showing, but came up short as only Greyson Lekander, Blake Bonneville and Nolan Wickstrom advanced to the second day of the Section 7A golf competition.
The boys unfortunately did not advance to state competition in Becker.
