The Barnum Bombers used balanced scoring to survive a big scare from the Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels' great free throw shooting to win a very close South Sub-Section 7AA quarterfinal 63-61 at Duluth Denfeld on Saturday, March 8.
Cheyanne Johnson paced the Bombers with a game-high 27 points, including three 3-pointers while Adri Jusczak paced the Rebels with 26 points, including 16-for-17 from the foul stripe, plus the junior was the game's leading rebounder with 13 rips. Daron Mainville had a double double for the Bombers as she scored 17 points, including one 3-pointer, and tore down 10 rebounds. Emily Miletich hit the double digits as she scored 13 points for Barnum.
The Rebels sank an amazing 33-for-36 (92 percent) of their free throws in the game, but the Bombers went a good 20-for-28 (71 percent) and placed three girls in the double figures and hit five 3-pointers at 5-for-22 (23 percent) while MLWR was 0-for-6 outside the arc.
The Bombers had a strong first half on the inside at 8-for-16 (50 percent) while the Rebels struggled in paint in the half, hitting just four of their 21 attempts in the lane (19 percent), but with the Rebels draining 14-for-14 at the stripe in the first half, Barnum led only 27-22 at halftime.
It was MLWR significantly improving in the paint in the second half as they went a solid 10-for-21 (48 percent). Barnum dipped a lot to 6-for-20 (30 percent) in the lane in the second half. For the game on total field goals, it was Barnum at 19-for-58 (33 percent) while the Rebels ended up at 14-for-48 (29 percent) on total field goal attempts.
The Rebels won the battle of the boards at 24-19, but Barnum took the steals at a large difference of 14-5 and had seven assists as compared to four shares for scores for MLWR. In the turnovers department, it was Barnum with an uncharacteristically high 15 lost possessions, but the Rebels had an even more troublesome 24 turnovers.
