Newman lifts Barnum past MLWR in semifinals
Barnum Bomber Brandon Newman takes to the air as Moose Lake/Willow River Rebel Brad Fossum tries to stop him.
Barnum Bomber Brandon Newman's 29 points, including three 3-pointers and 8-for-10 from the foul stripe, lifted the Bombers past the Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels in a close 61-57 contest during the South Sub-Section 7AA semifinals at UMD's Romano Gym in Duluth on Saturday, March 1.
The Rebels came out roaring like lions as they sank 8-for-14 volleys from outside the arc in the first half and still ended up at a very solid 12-for-28 (43 percent) for the game on the long ball. The Bombers had a tough time finding the range and went 3-for-14 in the first half and wound up just 6-for-24 (25 percent) on the long ones for the game.
Newman and company kept pace by pounding the paint with a success rate of 8-for-17 in the first half and finished at a good enough 14-for-33 (42 percent) in and near the lane. The Rebels, led by Matt Mach's 17 points, including four of MLWR's 12 3s, were just 2-for-9 in the paint in the first half but nevertheless led 30-29 at halftime. MLWR improved their lane game to 7-for-11 in the second half to finish at a decent 9-for-20 (45 percent) in the paint.
Combining the 3s and twos, it was the Rebels coming out on top statistically at 21-for-48 (44 percent) over Barnum's 20-for-57 (35 percent). But as so often is the case, it came down to free throws. The Bombers were a fair 15-for-26 (58 percent). MLWR shot only three free throws in the game and made all three of those tosses.
The Rebels edged the Bombers on the boards, but only 28-26. The Bombers held the advantage in steals at five to two. It was a split on the assists as each team had seven nice shares for scores. Turnovers are an important factor in any game and such was the case in this one. While the Bombers did an outstanding job in taking care of the basketball with a mere four lost possessions, the Rebels had some difficulties in the same department with 13 turnovers.
