The Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels girls basketball team hit an outstanding 18-for-22 (82 percent) from the foul line to foil the Floodwood Bears 52-46 in Willow River on December 19.
Adri Jusczak led all scorers as the 5' 11" junior forward had 22 points. Sophomore forward Ava Szczyrbak made the double digits with 10 points for ML/WR. Floodwood was paced by Megan Aho's 16 points, including two of Floodwood's three three-pointers. Stacey Larva had 15 points for the Polar Bears.
Neither team was throwing up many three balls. In fact, the Rebels never took even one try outside the arc in the entire game. The Polar Bears ended up going three-for-13 (23 percent) from threeland.
Moose Lake/Willow River held the upper hand on the inside game as they went a decent 17-for-48 (35 percent). Floodwood struggled to get shots in lane against the taller Rebels, but went 13-for-28 (46 percent) in the paint.
The teams totaled 17-for-48 (35 percent) for ML/WR and 16-for-41 (39 percent) for Floodwood. The Polar Bears had a hard time at the line as they went just 11-for-18 (61 percent) and that was the main difference in the game as the Rebels had that great 18-for-22 (82 percent) performance at the foul line.
Furthermore, the taller Rebels out-rebounded the Polar Bears 28-19 in the game. Floodwood was good at hawking the ball as they had a very good 16 steals in the game. The Rebels had nine steals. Clean assists were far and few between as the game was pretty rag tag. While the Rebels had four readily apparent feeds, the Polar Bears had just one notable pass for a score.
Turnovers were plentiful as ML/WR committed 24 miscues and the Polar Bears had 26 lost possessions.
