Newman leads Bombers past Rebels

Barnum Bomber Nathan Jelinek takes to the air while Moose Lake/Willow River Rebel Trenton Autio attempts to block the shot.

Brandon Newman was red hot and the Barnum Bombers used an inside game to defeat the Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels 74-53 in Moose Lake on Friday, December 13. Newman soared for a double-double as he had a team-high 32 points and 14 rebounds for Barnum. Nathan Jelinek made the double figures for the Bombers as he had 14 points. The Rebels were led by Matt Mach's 13 points, including three of ML/WR's six three-pointers. Charlie Adamczak hit the double digits for ML/WR as he scored 12 points.

The Bombers had just three threes as they went three-for-15 (20 percent) from outside the arc in the game. The Rebels fared somewhat better from long range as they went six-for-15 (40 percent) for the game. But it was the inside that shined for Barnum as they pounded the paint for a very good 28-for-50 (56 percent) while the Rebels were able to only muster 17-for-38 (45 percent) as they were without the services of two of their tallest players in Ezra Szczyrbak and Ike Pederson, who were out ill.

Barnum yanked down 39 boards in the game as compared to 28 rebounds for the Rebels. The Bombers also took the steals category at 10-3 while the teams tied on the clean and readily apparent assists at seven shares each. Both teams took pretty good care of the basketball with the Bombers having only four turnovers in the game and the Rebels having 10 lost possessions in the contest.

Total shooting stats saw the Bombers going 31-for-65 (48 percent) for the game while the Rebels went 23-for-53 (43 percent). The free throws found the Bombers making nine-for-15 (60 percent) and the Rebels making four-for-seven (57 percent).
