Vehicle hit by train

The Carlton County Sheriff's Office reports that on November 11 just after 4:30 p.m., a 911 caller reported a train had hit a vehicle near the intersection of Central Hall Road and Hwy. 210 in Sawyer Township, Carlton County.

Carlton County deputies, along with the Fond du Lac Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, and Carlton Fire and Ambulance, responded to the scene.

The accident involved a Dodge Dakota driven by John Martin Jr., 74, of Cloquet and a Burlington Northern & Santa Fe train driven by Nolan Bannor, 28, of Duluth.

Martin was traveling north, nearing the railroad crossing just south of Central Hall Road and Hwy. 210 when his vehicle began to slide on Central Hall Road due to icy road conditions. The train was traveling westbound through the railroad crossing at which time the collision occurred. The vehicle driven by Martin collided with the side of the train.

Neither driver reported injuries and no medical transport was required. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident and with the details of the investigation, no citations were issued to either driver.
