Continued success for school blood drives

The first blood drive of the school year, held at Willow River School, kicked off on Tuesday, September 17.

Willow River students Abby Johnson, Mya Alberg and Hayley Johnson with ABO Joe, the Memorial Blood Centers mascot.

Willow River High School's Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) group hosts six blood drives each year.

The experience provides students with many opportunities to take part in community outreach, organizing and promoting the events, as well as the added bonus of scholarship opportunities.

On September 25, three Willow River students, Abby Johnson, Mya Alberg, and Hayley Johnson, attended Memorial Blood Centers' annual high school workshop. This workshop allowed the students to learn more about the donation process, along with sharing best practices among area high schools.

For the third year in a row, Willow River High School was awarded the Memorial Blood Centers traveling trophy for having the most blood donations for the year. Willow River had 324 donations last year.

The next blood drive is Wednesday, November 13 from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. If you are interested in donating, contact Melissa Johnson at (218) 372-3131 ext. 249.
