The Barnum Bomber football team hosted the Cook County Vikings October 16.
The Vikings took the first possession, but the Bombers' defense was prepared for them as they were forced to punt the ball away after only three plays.
The Bombers then took the ball and marched up the field resulting in a Zach Peterson touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed, Bombers 6-0. The second play for the Vikings again came down to only four plays. With a fourth down, the Vikings were forced to punt the ball, but the punt was blocked.
Zach Carlson picked up the blocked ball and took it in for a touchdown, but the ball was called back because of a personal foul on the Bombers.
The Vikings got one more chance to punt the ball. Brandon Newman received the punt and returned the ball to the 50 yard line where the Bombers took over, this time the Vikings took their ground and the Bombers were forced to turn the ball over to the Vikings.
The Vikings worked the ball down the field and were on the verge of scoring, but Carlson intercepted a Vikings pass and returned the ball 97 yards for another Bomber touchdown. The 2-point conversion by Peterson was good.
The first quarter ended with the Bombers leading 14-0.
The second quarter began with the Vikings trying to move the ball again, but the Bombers' defence forced them to punt the ball.
The Bombers took over on the 34 yard line. This time it was a ground and passing game, with the help of Tanner Fuglestad and Mitchell Weller, both with pass receptions setting up a Newman touchdown. The extra point failed. The Bombers led 20-0.
The Vikings then received the ball on their 46 yard line. This time, the Vikings, in three plays, finally got on the board with a 51 yard touchdown run, and a 2-point conversion. The Bombers would lead 20-8.
The Bombers went on the offensive once again, this time starting at the 50 yard line. Carlson and Peterson pounded the ball up the field, but it was Fuglestad that got the touchdown with a 12 touchdown pass from Newman, with no extra point. The Bombers were in the lead 26-8.
The Vikings got the ball back, but the Bombers defense came up strong and with 1:30 left on the clock, the Vikings were forced to punt the ball again.
The Bombers received the ball and the went into a hurry up offense and marched the ball down the field. This time, the Bombers passed to Carlson, with a 2-point conversion pass to Carlson good, giving the Bombers a 34-8 point lead.
The Bombers then kicked the ball, this time the ball bounced off of a Vikings player's foot and the Bombers recovered the live ball. The Bombers recovered the ball on the 34 yard line of the Vikings. Newman passed the ball to Cody Shelgren at the 3 yard line to run in for the touchdown, with a 2-point conversion pass to Fuglestad good for a 42-8 point Bomber lead going into halftime.
The Bombers received first in the second half, but a fumble gave the ball to the Vikings. The Vikings then took over and began to move the ball, but the Bombers' defense was not ready to give in to the Vikings.
The Vikings tried to pass the ball, but with a third and long, Bomber Tory Slater busted through the Vikings' front line and sacked the quarterback eight yards behind the line, forcing the Vikings to punt.
The Bombers took over the ball on the Vikings' 43 yard line. Shelgren carried the ball to the 33 yard line. Next, Newman kept the ball and ran all the way to the 1 yard line, setting up a Peterson touchdown, with Weller's extra point failing. The Bombers led 48-8.
Tragedy struck the Vikings late in the third quarter with the removal of a player with a broken leg by the ambulance crew.
The Bombers began to sub in the junior varsity squad, thus giving the Vikings the opportunity to score.
The fourth quarter, with the clock on run time, the Vikings moved the ball down the field and scored. The Bombers' lead dropped to 48-16.
The Bombers came away from the night with another victory, giving them home field advantage in the first round of the section tournament.
