Buyouts on hold due to gov't shutdown
The federal government has partially shut down as a result of a showdown won by neither the Republican-controlled House nor the Democratic-controlled Senate. The last government shutdown occurred during the Clinton administration, for nearly a week in 1995 and three weeks in 1996, when Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House.
Locally, the June 2012 flood victims participating in the federal buyouts were notified Tuesday by Pine County Assessor Kelly Schroeder that the process is on hold again because of the shutdown. The county is waiting for its flood mitigation plan to be approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) which is a requirement for the buyouts.
