Rebels varsity team ready to play consistent volleyball
Forty-four girls came out for volleyball so head coach Beckie Jackson is hoping for consistency after making cuts and paring down the teams.
“This is the first time in along time that we have had to make cuts,” said Jackson. “We have a goal of playing consistent volleyball. We were about 8-16 last year, including tournament games."
Jackson is assisted by Joe McDonnell as the JV coach. Tonya Benzie is the new C team coach and Jackie Mohelsky is a volunteer assistant.
Jackson has several key returners upon which to pin her expectations.
“Our starting libero is Haley Johnson. Andrea Youngberg is outside. Jolene Eaton is outside. Adri Juscak is right side. Corrina Cisar is middle. That’s pretty good.
Of the forty four that came out, we took twelve on varsity, fifteen on junior varsity and nine on the C team. Those numbers we had to choose from were very good. The captains are Andrea, Corrina and Haley."
The coach identified some strengths and areas to improve upon.
“Our serving is tough,” stated Jackson. “We have servers who are tough and have worked hard to be able to hit their spots.
We’ve worked hard on attacks, so we are hoping to be able to run some different styles of offenses. Those are the two big things we are working on.
We will be continuing to become even more consistent. Right now it’s mainly in our passing and our setting.
Nikki Grutkoski is a senior setter and Lauren Ross is a junior setter.
"Our team is all juniors and seniors so that experience will help us along with the returnees.”
Jackson was asked to look at the Polar League Conference.
“Carlton will be the team,” she stated. “I’d go out there and say that.
"Esko will be strong. I think this will be one of our most successful years since I’ve come here.
I really like our consistency and our experience. We could be our only real obstacle on how well we do.
"We have to keep our minds about us. The girls want to be here and they want to win.”
