The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebel golf teams finished second in the eight-team Great River Conference. For the Lady Rebels it came down to the 18-hole conference championship meet to determine who would finish on top. Mille Lacs had won the regular season contest at the Fiddlesticks Golf Course by two shots. With a win at the conference championship, the Rebel girls would have tied for the season title. They came within one shot of doing just that, Mille Lacs (406), ML-WR (407), and Pine City (425). Top individual scores were Alexis Babcock (96), Kayla Larson (98), and Future-Hope Vang (106). This was Kayla Larson’s last conference meet. She has been a six-year varsity player.
The boys finished second in the conference behind last year’s Region 7A Champion Mille Lacs Raiders (327), ML-WR (348), and Aitkin (361). Leading the way for the Rebels were Gabe Doulglas (82), Grant Douglas (83), and Gavin Douglas (89). ML-WR placed seven golfers on the All-Conference Teams. Kayla Larson, Alexis Babcock, Lindsay Loehlein, and Future-Hope Vang shared that honor. All-Conference honors for the boys were members of the Douglas family including Grant, Gabe, and Gavin.
Section play begins next week (May 29, 30 and 31) at Pokegema Golf Course of Grand Rapids. The boys play Wednesday and the girls on Thursday. Rebel golfers who reach the finals will play on Friday, May 31 for a trip to the state tournament.
