Bike Rodeo set

Plans continue for organizing a Bike Rodeo at Riverside Arena in Moose Lake on April 27. The members of the Active Living Coalition finalized plans for the rodeo at a meeting on Wednesday, April 3, at Moose Lake Community Schools.

The Bike Rodeo will be held on that Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon for children up to 12 or 13 years old. Participants can come at any time during those hours. The participants should bring their bikes and helmets. For those that don’t have helmets, a helmet will be provided for them to keep.

The bikes will be checked before participating in the course that will be laid out to teach safe bike handling skills. A Moose Lake police officer will be assisting to help teach the skills.

There is no charge for the event.

Grant update

It was announced by Meghann Condit, the Safe Routes to School and SHIP Grant Coordinator, that the non-infrastructure grant has been awarded. No word had been received yet about the infrastructure grant at the time of the meeting, although word is expected in April.

The $25,300 non-infrastructure grant will be used to purchase a fleet of bicycles and an enclosed trailer to haul them for four schools in Carlton County, including the Moose Lake school.

The plan is for the health and phy-ed teachers from the schools to meet in May and brainstorm about how the bikes can be used before the bikes are purchased.
