The Barnum Bombers boys basketball team trailed the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels 32-27 at halftime, but Barnum used a combination of a slightly better inside game, one more three-pointer and three more free throws to defeat Moose Lake-Willow River 63-56 in Moose Lake on Friday, February 22.
By game’s end, the Bombers had gone an outstanding 18-22 from the free throw line to help secure the victory. Barnum improved to 20-3 with the win and has just two conference losses (Floodwood and Esko) and one non-conference loss (Braham). Moose Lake-Willow River went to 8-3 in the conference.
Barnum, led by Daniel Warpula’s 23 points, including two of Barnum’s five three-pointers and free throws to ice it a crunch time, put three players in double figures. The Rebels were paced by Tony Adamczak’s 15 points, including two of ML-WR’s five threes.
The Bombers went 2-for-7 in the first half from threeland and 3-for-6 from outside in the second half to go 5-for-15 (33 percent) on the long range shots for the game. The Rebels were 3-for-7 in the first half and 2-for-9 in the second half for 5-for-16 (31 percent) for the game from downtown.
Moose Lake-Willow River had the better inside game in the first half at 11-for-24, but that dipped to 6-for-14 in the second half as the Rebels finished the lane game at an average 17-for-38 (45 percent). The Bombers only went 6-for-18 in the paint in the first half but picked that up to a strong 8-for-12 in the second half to end up with a lane game right at 50 percent at 15-for-30.
Free throws found the Bombers sinking 9-for-10 in the first half and 9-for-12 in the second half to end up draining 18-for-22 of their charity tosses for an extremely good 82 percent. The Rebels only shot three times from the line in the first half and made one and they had made six of 10 in the second for a not so hot 53 percent at the stripe for the game.
By halves, ML-WR went 10-8 on the boards and Barnum went 8-11 for a near wash, with the Rebels being up by one off the glass at game’s end.
The Rebels did take the thefts at 5-1 for the game and the passes for readily apparent scores were even at 2-2. In a pretty intense game, both teams did a pretty good job of taking care of the basketball with ML-WR committing just 10 turnovers and Barnum having nine lost possessions.
