MLA girls make history
Sophomore forward Karina Cisar came up big for the Moose Lake Area Rebels hockey team on Thursday with a natural hat trick against the Eveleth-Gilbert Area Golden Bears at Riverside Arena in the opening playoff game. Pictured above is Cisar getting her first goal of the game. On Tuesday this week, the Rebels were in the second round of the playoffs against Hibbing in Cloquet. That game took place after deadline.
The third-seeded Moose Lake Area girls hockey team made history by hosting their first ever first-round playoff game at Riverside Arena in Moose Lake on Thursday, February 7. The Rebels outshot the sixth-seeded Eveleth-Gilbert Area Golden Bears by 41-21. The Rebels went on to win the game 4-0.
Kaitlyn Greene, coming in as one of the area leaders with a .909 saves percentage, pitched a shutout, stopping 21 shots on goal. Karina Cisar led the offense with a natural hat trick. Jessica Paull had a goal and Andrea Youngberg, Jamie Bird and Jessica Bird each had an assist in the 4-0 shut-out.
The Rebels advanced to play Chisholm-Hibbing on Tuesday, February 12 at Cloquet Recreation Center in Cloquet. The Rebels advance with a record of 14-9-3 while the Bluejackets came in with a record of 16-9.
The first penalty of only five in the game came against the Golden Bears' Hannah Gregorcich for a two minute tripping at 8:57. It was Cisar getting her first of three goals at 2:38 of the first period. Andrea Youngberg got the assist on the goal for 1-0, MLA. The Rebels outshot the Golden Bears 13-8 in the first period.
Youngberg got the second period’s only two seatings. The first was two minutes for tripping at 2:58 and the second was a hooking at 9:44, but the Rebels and Greene were steady on the kill and it stayed 1-0 until 13:51. Cisar scored unassisted for 2-0, MLA, heading into the third period. With the two penalties against MLA, EGA was able to outshoot MLA 10-6 in the period.
MLA and EGA each had a penalty in the third period, but neither team scored on their respective power plays. Youngberg went off for tripping at 7:38 and soon it was the Bears' Angela Larson for two minutes for body checking. Cisar’s hatter for 3-0 came at 13:17 and the assists went to Jessica Bird and Jamie Bird.
As of Wednesday, Jamie Bird had 35 points to pace the Rebels and to rank in the middle of the Northland’s scoring leaders. Erin Mollberg was on the list with 25 points.
Jessica Paull capped off the scoring at 4-0 as 14:47. Paull’s goal was assisted by MacKenzie Louzek. MLA had really peppered EGA in third period, outshooting the opponents 22-3.
